Klein / Lang Connection

In my last post I mentioned that my mom had a “new” 2nd cousin – Based on that 2nd cousin, I jumped the gun and assumed some things.  Well, I’m not so sure the connection is exactly as I assumed.

My mom’s other 2nd cousin has a Klein/Lang connection, and recently a 3rd/4th cousin tested on 23andme and I’ve figured out he has a connection to Ida Klein and Charles Lang but  my mom and him only share 85cM.

So, my mom has 1 second cousin who’s tree looks like this… (Portions of the tree have been removed and blacked out to respect privacy of others.)

Klein 2nd Cousin

The “new” 2nd cousin’s tree looks like this

Jung 2nd Cousin

Notice that the latter cousin has the name Kunz in her tree… I think this might mean she is a double cousin.  Also, a 3rd/4th cousin tested at 23andme and has similar ancestry – his great great grandparents are Ida Klein and Charles Lang – the above cousin’s great great grandparents are also Ida Klein and Charles Lang.

I believe my mom has some connection to the Lang/Klein lines – there were a few Lang’s and a few Klein’s that married one another so that might make this a little more difficult.

I’m still searching. 🙂

DNA Overlaps Among Cousins

Ok.

I’m having to write this out because my brain is just not processing it and I need to see it- if anyone reads this and has a suggestion, PLEASE comment below or contact me.

Soo.. my mom’s predicted second cousin, a descendant of Christian Klein and Gertrude Knopp is also related to a couple of my mom’s more distant (projected 3rd-5th) cousins. They just so happen to have an ancestor with the name Gertrude Knopp.  Coincidence?

1. It’s not the same Gertrude Knopp.

2. Gertrude Knopp, 2nd cousin’s ancestor, was born in 1836 in Germany and died in 1899 in Texas.  Based on other family trees, her parents were Peter Knopp (1808) and Margaretha Segner (1815) – this is the info I’m trying to verify. I’ve seen trees with Margaretha’s mom’s maiden name as Knopp as well.

3. Gertrude Knopp, 3rd to 5th cousin’s ancestor, was born around 1834-1836 in Germany and died in 1874 in Minnesota.  Based on census records, I think her mother’s name was Margaret (maiden name unknown) and born around 1807 in Germany.  She died in 1892 in Minnesota.

So 2nd cousin is related to 3rd-5th cousin – they are probably 3rd-4th cousins. Did that confuse you? ha – I’m trying to respect their privacy by not mentioning names 🙂 When I run comparisons, my mom’s DNA overlaps in completely different places. I assumed, the connection would be through the Knopp line but if there is no common overlap in DNA, is it possible?

Is it possible but unusual?

Or – could I be looking at the wrong ancestors of 2nd cousin – I ruled out one line completely – but this 2nd cousin does have 2 sets of great grandparents (besides the ones I’ve ruled out).

There is another 3rd-5th cousin that has not responded to my invitation to share on 23andMe.  In his very limited profile, he has listed Minnesota in family locations and Knopp as a surname.  I wish to know if he is related to these cousins of mine and my mom’s.

I have had lots of people respond recently.. still no response from my mom’s closest match.  😦

But, I am overloaded with the amount of family names I’m looking into.  I’ve also connected with an X-match (3rd to 6th cousin) whose ancestors are from Germany and settled in Gillespie County, Texas.  Family names Pehl and Stein – (his great great great grandparents).

23andMe results are in!

Woohoo!

I about jumped out of my skin when I got the email saying the results were done.  In case you were wondering how long it took to get the 23andMe results back.. they received the sample on 10/3/14 – and the results were ready 10/16/14.  Very happy I didn’t have to wait the estimated 3-4 weeks.

Anyways, I was very impressed by the design of the website and kind of excited to see the haplogroup info… I still have no idea what it means but my mom is part of the H haplogroup.  Some famous people that were part of the H haplogroup as reported by 23andMe… Luke the evangalist, Prince Philip, Marie Antoinette, Susan Sarandon, and Napoleon Bonaparte.

The more exciting part of 23andMe was the chance of finding new and closer matches.  And yes – we did get 2 definite 2nd cousin matches. YAY!

One second cousin has already responded and with the exhange of some basic information, I found out she was the great granddaughter of Christian Klein and Gertrude Knopp… I have already run across these names when I was working on the German immigrant family in Gillespie County, Texas.  This just kind of confirms that idea that my mom is related to the Kleins. Since the predicted relationship between my mom and this 23andMe member is 2nd cousins, I can only assume that Christian Klein and Gertrude Knopp, her great grandparents, are the connection.

It’s likely, that the actual relationship is 2nd cousins once removed meaning Christian Klein and Gertrude Knopp are more likely to be my mom’s Great Great Grandparents.

I’m still waiting on my mom’s #1 – closest match to respond. She shares 5.46% with my mom and supposedly that’s a good amount considering she is a possible 2nd cousin.  According to 23andMe, my mom and this top match are actually closer to being 1st cousins once removed. I really need her to respond.

For now, I’m waiting on 23andMe members to respond. While I’m waiting, I’ll be working on this Christian Klein/Gertrude Knopp connection.

I would really recommend 23andme to anyone interested about their heritage.  Sign up take the test!
